pH scale and indicators Flashcards
(14 cards)
When an acid is dissolved in water, we get an…
..acidic solution.
When a base dissolves in water we get an …
…alkaline solution.
If a solution is neither acidic nor alkaline…
…it’s neutral.
What are indicators?
-substances that change colour when they are added to acidic or alkaline solutions
-most common one is universal indicator
Alkali
-base that is soluble in water
Acid
-corrosive substance with a pH lower than seven
What causes acidity?
-high concentration of hydrogen ions
pH
-scale of acidity or alkalinity
When acids dissolve in water…
…they produce hydrogen ions.
When alkalis dissolve in water…
…they produce hydroxide ions.
When a neutralisation reaction occurs to form water..
…hydroxide ions (-) react with hydrogen ions (+).
How can we tell an acid is strong?
-from how well it disassociates
e.g. when an acid reacts with water, it disassociates, producing hydrogen ions
The stronger the acid…
… the more it can split and release those hydrogen ions.
…the more violently it will react with metals and carbonates (more fizzing and raise the temperature)
Less disassociation…
…less of a reaction
