Q

What is pharmacokinetics? (2)

A
  • Interpreting data on changing drug and metabolites concs/amounts in body tissues/fluids
  • What the body does to the drug

Q

Why is ADME important? (4)

A
  • To know if drug absorbed if given by particular route
  • To estimate accurate plasma conc of drug as fraction of time
  • To know where drug goes in body
  • To know if drug metabolites are safe

Q

Why is it important to estimate accurate drug plasma concentrations as a fraction of time?

A

Drug plasma concentration is dynamic - changes with time

Q

Give an example of a drug where drug distribution knowledge prevented side effects (5)

A
  • Piriton = hayfever drug with drowsiness side effect
  • Blocked histamine receptors in nasal passages and eyes (anti hayfever)
  • But also blocked histamine receptors in brain = drowsiness
  • Claritin = hayfever drug without drowsiness side effct
  • Structure altered so can’t cross blood brain barrier but still blocks periphery histamine receptors
