1
Q
What are the two main methods of eliminating drugs?
A
1: Metabolism/Biotransformation
- lipid soluble drugs
- conversion to another molecule
- remains in the body
2: Excretion
- water soluble drugs
- no conversion is required
- removes compounds from the body
2
Q
Where are sites of drug excretion?
A
-Kidneys
-Biliary excretion
( through bile- GI tract -faeces often for big polar drugs)
-Lungs
3
Q
What is the function of the kidneys in drug excretion?
A
Regulates volume and composition of body fluids
Converses essential substances and removes waste products
Removes water soluble drugs and metabolites (depend on physio-chemical properties)
