Phase II Exercise Prescriptions Flashcards
(18 cards)
When should you initiate resistance training for MI in phase 2 cardiac rehab?
Minimum of 5 weeks after date of MI
When should you initiate resistance training for cardiac surgery in phase 2 cardiac rehab?
4 weeks of consistent participation in a supervised CR program
When should you initiate resistance training p transcatheter procedures in phase 2 cardiac rehab?
Minimum of 3 weeks p procedure including 2 weeks of consistent participation in a supervised CR program
When can a patient with sternal precautions initiate resistance training of moderate to heavy weights?
3 months
What are contraindications for resistance training?
CHF
Uncontrolled arrhythmias
Severe valvular dz (precautions post aortic valve repair/replacement)
Uncontrolled HTN (SBP > 160 mmHg, DBP > 100 mmHg)
Unstable symptoms
When can you progress the patients load with resistance training?
Progress by 5% when pt can comfortably lift 12-15 reps
Large mm groups before small mm groups
Low risk pts start resistance training at rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of __________, when can you progress?
RPE of 13 @ 40-50% of 1 RM
After 4-6 weeks progress to RPE of 17 @ 20%
Moderate risk pt progression
Start as above, after 4-6 weeks progress to 15%
As pt strength improves (8 weeks) progress 2-5 lbs for UE, 5-10 lbs for LE
Repetitions UE vs LE
8-12 repetitions at 1 RM 30-40% for UE, 50-60% for LE
What is the 1 RM?
Desired number of repetitions using correct form reaching RPE of 11 to 13
How should you dose your number of sets?
1 set per exercise with 8 to 10 exercises incorporating all major mm groups
Resistance training should be performed how many times per week?
2-3 times per week
