phobias (behaviour approach) Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is a phobia?
An irrational fear.
what are the three behavioural characteristics?
-avoidance
-endurance
-panic
what are the three emotional characteristics?
-fear
-anxiety
-disproportionate response
what are the three cognitive characteristics?
-selective attention
-irrational thinking
-cognitive distortion
what are the behaviourist explanations of phobias?
Phobias are learnt behaviours from our environment; therefore, they can be unlearnt.
two process model by Mower?
classical conditioning-association
operant conditioning- reinforcement
evaluation for this two process model by mower?
-incomplete explanation as some phobias are innate.
-It cannot explain the phobias that have no trauma, there are other alternative explanations.
+good practical application to therapies like SD and flooding.
-reductionist explenation, humans are more complex.
Systematic desensitisation:
- anxiety hierarchy
- relaxation
- exposure
evaluation of SD:
+ effective treatment
+ more acceptable
- long process
Flooding:
Exposing a phobic stimulus immediately, (classical conditioning terms: this is extinction)
evaluation of flooding:
+ cost effective
- high trauma so ethical issues
+ fast process
- can’t cure all phobias
