Sound Inventory
It is the sound productions of words.
Phonetics
Is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the production and classification of the world’s speech sounds.
Articulatory Phonetics
Aims at describing the process of articulation.
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
Transcription systems which have a separate symbol
for each sound.
Received Pronunciation
The instantly recognizable accent often described as ‘typically British’.
General American
The standard reference accent of North American English, for which the symbols are typically used.
Phonetic Symbol
A written character used in phonetic transcription of represent a particular speech sound.
Pulmonic Ingressive
Sounds being made while breathing in
Vocal Tract
The entire passage above the larynx. This is where speech sounds are shaped.
Articulators
Any vocal organ that takes part in the production of a speech sound.
Place of Articulation
The location at which two speech organs approach or come together in producing a speech sound
Bilabial
A speech sound articulated using both lips (upper and bottom).
Alveolar
Consonant sounds that are produced with the tongue close to or touching the ridge behind the teeth on the roof of the mouth.
Labio-Dentals
Involves only the bottom lip and additionally the upper teeth.
Manner of Articulation
The configuration and interaction of the articulators when making a speech sound.
Affricates
A consonant sound that begins as a stop (sound with complete obstruction of the breath stream) and concludes with a fricative (sound with incomplete closure and a sound of friction).
Vowels
A sound in spoken language that is characterized by an open configuration of the vocal tract so that there is no build-up of air pressure above the glottis.
Diphthongs
A gliding vowel in the articulation of which there is a continuous transition from one position to another.
Monophthong
Simple vowels with no change in qauilty.
Glottis
The middle part of the larynx; the area where the vocal cords are located.
