Identify the four elements of ‘SWAT’
Symbolic, audio, written and technical codes
What are symbolic codes?
Objects, setting, body language, costume, props, colour and lighting
What are written codes?
Titles, credits, logos and subtitles
What are audio codes?
Music, sound, affect and dialogue
What are technical codes?
Camera shots, camera angles, camera movement, lighting and framing
Visual conventions mean the same thing as?
Elements, techniques, language features and language techniques
What is a symbol?
An object that has additional meaning from its physical form
What can props represent?
Social class, ethnicity, religion, occupation, personality, hobbies and beliefs
Body language includes?
Build, posture, gesture, touch, proximity, choice of subject (age, race, gender), facial expression and gaze
What is a demanding gaze?
The eyes of the subject are fixed on the viewer, demanding attention and creating a connection between subject and viewer
What is an offering gaze?
The eyes of the subject are looking at another object, or beyond the frame, creating intrigue for viewers
What is juxtaposition?
The positioning of two things next to each other for the purpose of contrasting or comparison
What is a camera angle?
Where the camera is placed, not the subject matter
What is the purpose of birds eye view angle?
Establishing a scene or emphasising the insignificance or smallness of subjects
What is a high angle?
Camera is high up and looks down on a subject
Why is a high angle used?
Makes the subject look venerable or small and is designed to make the audience sympathise with the subject
What is the purpose of over the shoulder angle?
Helps the audience see from the subjects point of view
Why is a canted camera angle used?
Creates interesting action or disorienting images
Why is an eye level angle used?
Gives a sense of equality between viewer and subject
Why is a low angle used?
Makes the subject look more powerful or menacing
Why is an establishing shot used?
To establish a setting or landscape
What is a long shot?
Shows subjects full body but from a distance
Why is a long shot used?
To show location or relationship r subjects
What is a full shot?
Contains subjects full body but up close
