Photosynthesis Flashcards
(6 cards)
Define Photosynthesis
When plants harness energy form the sun to create their own food, such as glucose and oxygen
Write the photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide+water→(light) oxygen+glucose
6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O2
Uses of Glucose
-To build cell walls
-Build structures for the plant and grow
-Converts it into starch for storage
-Releases energy through respiration
What does a plant need for photosynthesis?
-Light
-Carbon Dioxide
-Water
-Chlorophyll (within leaf)
How are leaves adapted for photosynthesis?
-Waxy Cuticle: A thin waxy covering on the outer surface of the leaf. Prevents water loss within the leaf through evaporation
-Spongey Mesophyll: It’s cells are not tightly packed together to allow carbon dioxide to reach the palisade cells for photosynthesis
-Stomata: Special doors that let carbon dioxide and oxygen into the lewf
-Palisade Mesophyll: They have lots of chloroplasts to catch as much sunlight as possible to carry out photosynthesis. They are also block shaped so they can be tightly packed together
-Xylem And Phloem: Xylem moves water and solutes from the roots the the leaves. The phloem transports food substances from leaves to the rest of the plant
