Photosynthesis Flashcards
(25 cards)
What organisms can use energy directly from sunlight?
Green plants and a few bacteria
How do plants use energy from the sun?
Absorb sunlight though the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
Where does photosynthesis take place in the plant?
In the green parts of the plant, mainly the leaves
What do plants produce from photosynthesis? And what type?
Food
Glucose
What is the waste product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
Word equation for photosynthesis?
Sunlight
Carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll
Why will photosynthesis not occur if the temperature is too high..
All the reactions are controlled by enzymes. High temperature denatures the enzyme
What process can glucose be used for by the plant?
.
Respiration
What can glucose be used to make by the plant?
Proteins (for new cells)
Cellulose (for cell walls)
Proteins require a supply of nitrogen which comes from nitrates in the soil
How is glucose transported by the plant?
Transported from leaves to other parts of the plant (to growing points)
How is excess glucose stored?
Stored in leaf cells as starch
What do scientists test for to see if photosynthesis has happened?
Why?
Starch
The glucose is rapidly used and changed into starch. It is easier to test for starch that has been stored.
What does light do in the process of photosynthesis?
Provides the energy needed to make carbohydrates
What does carbon dioxide do in the process of photosynthesis?
It is a raw material needed for the manufacture of carbohydrates
What is water needed for in the process of photosynthesis?
A raw material for photosynthesis
What does chlorophyll do in the process of photosynthesis
Absorbs the light energy. It is in the chloroplasts of the leaf cell
Why is a suitable temperature needed for the process of photosynthesis?
So that enzymes which control photosynthesis can work well
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Temperature
Light intensity
Level of carbon dioxide
NOT WATER
What is a limiting factor?
The factor that controls the rate of photosynthesis at a given time, and if increased, will boost the rate. At night, light is limiting factor, winter its temperature and at day it’s carbon dioxide
Name the three photosynthesis experiments
Testing leaves for starch
Removing carbon dioxide
Using oxygen and carbon dioxide sensors.
How do you test leaves for starch?
Boil the leaf in alcohol
This removes the colour
Stain with iodine
Blue black indicated starch
Explain the removing carbon dioxide experiment
Remove co2 with sodium hydroxide solution, to test the need for co2 in photosynthesis
Explain the co2 and O sensor experiment
This monitors the rate of photosynthesis
What can you measure to measure the photosynthetic activity?
It’s rate of production
