16
Q

State one function of guard cells

A

Open and close stomata and for protection

17
Q

State on function of stomata

A

Allow gas exchange

18
Q

State the difference between stomata and air space

A

Stomata are the external access point to the internal air space.

19
Q

How do plants utilize the products of photosynthesis ?

A

-Stored as starch
-Used by the plant as a source of energy
- Transport as a sucrose.

20
Q

List the steps to test for starch and their reasons.

A

1) Heat the leaf in boiling water
Why: To destroy all the leaf cells or denature of enzymes

2) Heat the leaf in Ethanol
Why: To remove chlorophyll and since ethanol is flammable

3)Wash the leaf with water
Why: To soften the leaf

4) Add iodine solution
Why: To test for starch

21
Q

What colour will the leaf turn if Stacy is present in a starch test?

22
Q

Which solution produces carbon dioxide and which absorbs it?

A

NaHCO3 solution ( Sodium hydro carbonate) produces carbon dioxide.
NaOH solution (sodium hydroxide) absorbs carbon dioxide

23
Q

Which colour will an indicator turn into when carbon dioxide is present?

24
Q

Which colour will an indicator turn into in the presence of oxygen?

25
Why do plants need transport systems?
They are cellular, which means they have a huge demand of resources.
26
List the aspects of xylem
-Carries water and minerals to the leaves - made out of dead cells -Cell wall made of lignin -No cytoplasm -Thick cell wall -flow is upward -Has a hollow tube
27
List the aspects of phloem
-Carries (glucose) to growing parts and storage organs -made of living cells -Cell wall made of cellulose -Permeable cell walls -Thin cell wall -Flow is up and down
28
List the Adaptive features of root hair cells to its function
-Cellulose cell wall: maintain the shape of the cell -Vacuole: maintain osmotic pressure -Nucleus: Maintain the cell activity -Long projection: To increase surface area for absorbing water and minerals
29
What is meant by transpiration?
-Water vapor evaporates form the cell lining the air spaces and then passes out of the leaf through the stomata by diffusion .
30
Describe the function of the guard cells
Guard cells control the size of the stomata. When they are swollen this means the stoma is opening . When they are shrunken this means the stoma is closing.
