Photosynthesis Process And Leaf Structure Flashcards
(30 cards)
State the chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O ——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is photosynthesis?
Process which plant manufactures carbohydrates in the presence of light using carbon dioxide and water.
Where does photosynthesis take place.
In the palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll. (Organs that contain chloroplasts/chlorophyll).
What is the purpose of photosynthesis?
To create a carbohydrate called glucose, which is food for the plant
State the difference between chloroplast and chlorophyll?
-Chloroplast contains green pigments called chlorophyll to trap sunlight for photosynthesis process
What is granum?
A stack of Thylokoids in a chloroplast
State all parts of the leaf form up to down
-Waxy cuticle
-Upper epidermis
-Palisade mesophyll
-Spongy mesophyll
-Vascular bundle (xylem and phloem)
-Lower epidermis
-Guard cells
-Stomata
What is the function of the leaves?
Contains chlorophyll for photosynthesis process
What is the function of the roots?
Absorbs water and minerals and water from the soil.
What is the function of the stem?
Transports glucose and water within the plant.
State one adaptive feature and one function of waxy cuticle
Adaptive feature: made up of wax
Function: act as a water proof to reduce water loss
State one adaptive feature and one function of Upper epidermis
Adaptive feature: transparent media
Function:For protection/ or allow sunlight to penetrate through the leaf
State one adaptive feature and one function of palisade mesophyll
Adaptive feature: large number of chloroplasts, tightly packed together
Function: trap sunlight for photosynthesis process
State one adaptive feature and one function of spongy mesophyll layer
Adaptive feature: contains air space
Function: allow air particles to diffuse
State one adaptive feature and one function of Vascular bundle
Xylem: transports water form root up to the leaf
Phloem: translocation products of photosynthesis
State one function of guard cells
Open and close stomata and for protection
State on function of stomata
Allow gas exchange
State the difference between stomata and air space
Stomata are the external access point to the internal air space.
How do plants utilize the products of photosynthesis ?
-Stored as starch
-Used by the plant as a source of energy
- Transport as a sucrose.
List the steps to test for starch and their reasons.
1) Heat the leaf in boiling water
Why: To destroy all the leaf cells or denature of enzymes
2) Heat the leaf in Ethanol
Why: To remove chlorophyll and since ethanol is flammable
3)Wash the leaf with water
Why: To soften the leaf
4) Add iodine solution
Why: To test for starch
What colour will the leaf turn if Stacy is present in a starch test?
Blue/black
Which solution produces carbon dioxide and which absorbs it?
NaHCO3 solution ( Sodium hydro carbonate) produces carbon dioxide.
NaOH solution (sodium hydroxide) absorbs carbon dioxide
Which colour will an indicator turn into when carbon dioxide is present?
Yellow
Which colour will an indicator turn into in the presence of oxygen?
Purple
