Physical and Chemical Changes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a physical change?
A change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance.
What changes can a physical change cause?
The appearance, shape, or size of a substance may be altered during a physical change.
List examples of a physical change.
Melting an ice cube, making wool into a sweater, boiling water, dissolving sugar in water, chopping wood, and crushing a can are all examples.
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change is the process by which one or more substances change into entirely new substances.
How are chemical changes influenced by temperature?
Higher temperatures often mean faster chemical reactions.
List examples of a chemical change.
Iron rusting, burning, cooking an egg, baking a cake, vinegar and baking soda, and a banana rotting.
How can you tell if a chemical change has occurred?
Production of an odor, fizzing and foaming, production of a gas, production of light, production of sound, changes In temperature, and changes in color are evidence of a chemical change.
What does Endothermic mean?
Cooling
What does Exothermic mean?
Warming
What is the law of conservation of mass?
in ordinary chemical or physical changes, mass is not created or destroyed. It is only transformed into different substances.
