Physical and Human Processes 4.2 Flashcards

1
Q

Compare the weathering that is found in the uplands and lowlands

A

In the uplands, the temperature is lower due to altitude and the rock types are much more resistant to weathering. On the other hand, the lowlands consist of warmer temperatures and less resistant rock. In the uplands, freeze-thaw is common due to the large amounts of rain and temperature. However, in the lowlands, the soft rock is eroded by the slightly acidic rain

Q

Compare the soil/rock movement processes in the uplands and lowlands

A

In the uplands, there are large amounts of hill and slopes so landslides are common in the lake district. Rain adds to the weight of weathered rock so it slides easily
On the other hand, slope processes are slower in the lowlands. The most common is soil creep. Caused by rain dislodging soil from strata to form a landscape know as scarp and vale topography

Q

Compare misfit rivers and dry valleys (location, characteristics, formation)

A

After the ice has melted away completely, rivers again flow through many U-shape valleys. These rivers are far too small to have eroded the valley they flow through and are therefore known as misfit streams.

On the other hand, a dry valley is a valley cut by water erosion but containing no permanent surface stream, typically one occurring in an area of porous rock such as limestone.

Q

Explain how glaciers have affected both landscapes

A

The lowland areas across Britain, where ancient glaciers have created plains and rolling landscapes and deposited fertile material transported from highland areas, provide an opportunity for different activities.

In the upland, glaciers have eroded the landscape creating valleys and rivers. These mountains made by the valleys and glaciers provide tourism and jobs for the area

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the Upland landscape

A

Sheep Farming - influence - Deforestation, stone walls, no tree
Advantages - Jobs for the people of the area - tradition
Disadvantages - deforestation means no trees to intercept the water therefor it leads to saturation and surface run off and then flooding

Settlements- Building of houses
Advantages - Jobs and places for people to live
Disadvantages - Use of important rock could lead to large amounts of erosion

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the Lowland landscape

A

Settlements- Building of houses
Advantages - Large population growing, more jobs for people
Disadvantages - Historic features could be replaced, loss of rock

Crop farming - High rates of deforestation needed
Advantages - Food for the people and jobs for the people. Money, because people can sell what they grow

Q

Compare which landscape (up/low) have been affected more by humans

A

I think that the upland landscape has been affected more by humans due to tourism. This has lead to paths having to be made so that people can access the fells a safe way. However, these paths scar the landscape and can lead to erosion if over used. On the other hand, the lowlands have more been affect by weathering due to the type of roc, rather then by humans.
