Physical Chemistry 2)b) - Reaction feasibility Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is meant by a feasible reaction?
a reaction that occurs at particular temperature
what is entropy?
the degree of disorder in a system
what is the formula to calculate the enthalpy of a reaction?
∆ ° = Σ∆ °products − Σ∆ ° reactants
what is the third law of thermodynamics?
the entropy of a perfect crystal at 0 K is zero
what can be said about entropy in relation to the degree of disorder?
the greater the entropy, the greater the degree of disorder
what is the second law of thermodynamics?
total entropy of a reaction system and
its surroundings always increases for a spontaneous process
what is Gibbs standard free energy?
a measure of the potential work that may be done by a system at constant temperature pressure
what is the formula for Gibbs free energy?
∆G°= ∆H° - T∆S°
what are the requirements for a reaction to be feasible?
∆G° must be lower than 0 and the activation energy must be low enough for the reaction to proceed under standard conditions
