physical fieldwork v2 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the title of this field work?
Investigating How the River Darent’s cross Profile is linked to velocity.
What were some risks and how did we prevent them?
Falling into the River–>Wear shoes with grip
Drowning–>Don’t go in water above knees
Lost/ Injured–>Teacher with each group
Infection from river–> Washing hands
Why was this location suitable for our physical fieldwork enquiry?
Local site–> Accessible by mini bus to multiple stops in one day
Safe for students–>Allowed us to test the Bradshaw model
What was data collection Method 1?
Gradient Measurement–> A clinometer was used between two ranging poles to measure the slope of the riverbed.
Strength: Easy + Quick, Simple equipment
Weaknesses: May be some user error
–> Stratified Sampling method
What was data collection Method 2?
Velocity Measurement–> The Geopack Stream Flowmeter was used to measure velocity at 3 points( Left, Right, Centre) across river width.
The average of the readings was taken as sites velocity
Strengths: Accurate device to measure, Easy+ Quick
Weakness: Not enough readings, People/objects in the way, Inaccurate timer, Device stopped working.
–> Stratified Sampling method
What is data presentation method 1?
Scatter Graphs
Strength: Look for patterns/ correlation in data, Visual, see anomalies
Weakness: Inability to prove causation
What was data presentation method 2?
Maps/Field stretches
Strengths: Clearly show sites, Annotations showing data, proportional circles
Weakness: Some may lack detail, Circles may be unclear
Analysis
Results Mostly align with Bradshaw Model prediction–> Velocity, Width and depth increase downstream as expected.
Gradient and bed load size decrease due to increased erosion and transportation.
Evaluation
Not random selection with bias
Human errors–> Could of used better equipment
Only done in one day–> could of spent more days
Used predicted data for Dartford
