Physics Flashcards
(17 cards)
SCALARS
Measurements that have quantity but no direction e.g. distance (describes how far an object has traveled along a path)
VECTORS
Quantity & direction e.g. displacement (describes how far an object has traveled from its starting point)
SPEED
Describes how quickly something is moving ; found by dividing distance by time (scalar value)
VELOCITY
Rate at which an object changes position ; found by dividing displacement by time (vector value)
ACCELERATION
How quickly an object changes velocity
FORCE
A push or pull that causes an object to move or change direction
GRAVITY
The attraction of one mass to another mass
NORMAL FORCE
Occurs when an object is resting on another object
BUOYANT FORCE
The upward force experienced by floating objects
NEWTONS 1ST LAW
An object that is at rest stays at rest and at object that is in motion stays in motion, unless acted by a force
NEWTONS 2ND LAW
Force = Mass • Acceleration
NEWTONS 3RD LAW
For every action, there is an equal & opposite reaction
ENERGY
The capacity of an object to do work
KINETIC ENERGY
The energy possessed by objects in motion
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Possessed by objects that have the potential to be in motion due to their position
CONDUCTION
Occurs when 2 substances are in contact w each other
CONVECTION
Transfers energy through circular movement of air or liquids
