Physics - Electricity Flashcards

1
Q

what is electricity about

A

form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current

Q

parallel vs series circuit

A

parallel - components are connected in branches and are adjacent to one another, voltmeters are connected in parallel
series - components are connected with each other in a single line, ammeters are connected in series

Q

what is a generator

A

they work on the principle of electromagnetic induction, involving the creation of electric current in a wire when it is exposed to a changing magnetic field

Q

what is a motor

A

a machine that uses electromagnetism to spin, it needs a current carrying coil and a magnet

17
Q

what is a transformer, give examples

A

eg - power lines
a transformer is a device that is used to transfer electrical energy between two circuits through electromagnetic induction

they consist of 2 coils of wire, called the primary coil and the secondary coil, that is wrapped around a magnetic core. when the AC flows through the primary coil creating a changing magnetic field that induces an AC voltage in the secondary coil
