Q

Why does the IV graph of a diode look like tat?

A

The current through a diode only flows through 1 direction, in the other direction, resistance is extremely high

Q

What is special about the potential difference, current and resistance in a series circuit?

A

Current is equal all around
Potential difference is shared between components

7
Q

What is an alternating current and what causes it?

A

It’s caused by an alternate potential difference (one that goes from positive to negative)
AC means the current periodically changes direction/reverses

9
Q

Why are step up transformers used?

A

Large amounts of energy need to be transmitted by the mains supply.
This means that a high current should be used, however, this generates lot of heat due to high resistance - meaning energy is wasted
Instead, a high potential difference is created to reduce dissipated energy.

12
Q

Why are step-down transformers necessary?

A

High voltage created from step up transformers is extremely dangerous and can cause electric shocks and blow up appliances

17
Q

specific latent heat?

A

the amount of energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance without changing the temperature

18
Q

specific latent heat of fusion?

A

change of state from solid to liquid

19
Q

specific latent heat of vaporisation?

A

change of state from liquid to vapour

20
Q

what is activity and what is it measured in?

A

activity is the overall rate of decays in a radioactive sample (measured in Bq, becquerels)

21
Q

what is half life? 2 definitions

A
  • time taken for number of radioactive nuclei in a sample to halve
  • time taken for activity to halve
23
Q

Qualities of alpha radiation?

A
  • Highly ionising
  • Not penetrating (stopped by paper and can only travel a few cm in air)
24
Q

Qualities of beta radiation?

A

Moderately ionising
Somewhat penetrating (can go through paper but is stopped by a few mm of aluminium, can travel 1m in air)

25
Qualities of gamma?
EM wave Not ionising Extremely penetrating (needs a few cm of lead to stop)
