Physics Words Revision Flashcards
Transverse wave
A wave in which the vibration causing the wave is at a right angles to the direction of the energy transfer
Longitudinal wave
A wave in which the vibration causing the wave is parallel to the direction of the energy transfer ( looks like a barcode )
Amplitude
The height of the wave measured from the middle ( the undisturbed position of the water)
Wavelength
The distance from a point on 1 wave to the exact same spot on the next wave
Frequency
The number of waves produced each second. It is also the number of waves passing a point each second
Period
The time taken to produce 1 wave
Angle of refraction
The angle between the refracted ray and the normal
Echo
Reflection of sound ( double the distance of travel)
Equation for finding velocity
V=f x y
Velocity = frequency x wavelength
Velocity
Velocity = distance / time
Frequency ( equation )
Frequency = 1 / time period Hz = 1 / s
What is the symbol for frequency
Hz
Symbol for velocity
V
Symbol for wavelength
Upside down y
Dissipate
To scatter in all directions or to use waste fully . When energy has been dissipated it means we Carnt get it back . The energy has spread out and heats up the surroundings
Specific heat capacity
The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1c
Non renewable energy resources
Energy resources which will run out
Renewable resources
Energy sources which will never run out and replenished as they are used
Alternative energy resources
Resources other than fossil fuels . The resources may or may not be renewable
Biofuel
Fuel produced from biological material. They are provided from trees such as willows
