Physiology Flashcards
(6 cards)
High risk for re-feeding syndrome factors
BMI < 16
Unintentional weight loss >15% over 3-6 months
Reduce nutritional intake >10days
HypoK,phos,Mg prior to feeding - e.g. Diuretics
Hx of ETOH abuse, insulin, chemo, diuretics, antacids
Stress response effects
Substrate mobilisation, Muscle protein degradation, suppression of anabolic hormone secretion (GH, insulin, testosterone), activation of SNS, immunological and haematological changes
Hormones that are increased in the stress response
Growth hormones, Cortisol, Renin, ACTH, Aldosterone, Prolactin, ADH, Glucagon
What are mesangial cells and what is their function
Contractile cells that are located in the tubule. They will secrete aldosterone when systolic <65mmHg
What is the MOA of cortisol physiologically
Made from cholesterol in the adrenal cortex, it binds to intracellular receptors that migrate to the nucleus to affect gene transcription
