Physiology of the Newborn II Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the major factors influencing O2 sats?
VSD, coarctation of the aorta, tetralogy of fallot, CCHD
describe the Guthrie test
NNST, heel prick sent away for problems including CF, cong hypothyroidism, spinal muscular atrophy etc
what might happen in a neonate when glucose stores run out?
they may start ketogenesis and lactate formation to fill in gaps until milk can provide enough energy
why are babies born from DM mother’s at a high risk of hypo?
they are used to being in an environment where there is a high amount of glucose available, transitioned to low availability but continue to use too much -> run out faster
what is the main reason in baby weight drop in first few days?
loss of extracellular fluid via the kidneys
when should neonates exceed their birth weight?
by 2 weeks
define failure to thrive
weight below 3rd centile or dropping 2 major percentile lines over time
list some causes of failure to thrive
inadeq food intake/vol/quality, B12 defic, inability to properly utilise food, excessive energy utilisation eg WOB, loss of nutrients eg vomiting/diarrhea
compare amount of bones in neonatal spinal column to adult
33 bones in neonatal SC at birth, 24 in adult
what bones need to be separate at birth to allow head to fit through birth canal?
skull and jaw bones
when does synaptogenesis begin and roughly finish, and when is the most rapid time and what does this allow for?
24K till around 8 months old, most rapid point at birth, allows for brain growth and learning of early behaviours
alveolar growth depends on _______ growth which is mediated by ____ _________
lung, chest size
