- 1962
- linocut technique
- painting of some apples and a glass on a table under a hanging lamp
Painting 1 focal point
-the hanging lamp because it is the widest object used and the mass of black lampshade draws your eye and stands out from the many other colours used in the background.
Colours of painting 1?
- only 2 primary colours used: fiery red and vivid yellows are used extensively, no blues
- red and yellow harmonises, creates patches of light
- contrasts the dark greens and black (shadows) make objects pop out
- white only used in glass, to show light shining through the object to prove it is made of glass.
Tone? P1
- abstract, so no tone
- black at base of apples creates a flat tone
- show the angle of the light
Lines and edges? P1
- lots of curved lines, though the blocks of colour make them appear hard
- small lines in the ma made objects, give them a harder shape than the apples
Subject matter p2
- ‘still life (nature morte)’
- 1945, oil on canvas
- jug, candlestick and pan resting on a table
- large objects in cubist fashion
- black outline on all objects emphasis them against blue bg
- all objects are diff, jug angular, candlestick curved, pot simplest
P2 and influence?
- Nature norte translates to ‘dead nature
- possibly reflective of post war era
- WWII just ended
Focal point of p2
-candlestick because it is diff from the other objects bc it’s curved and a completely diff colour from rest of painting
Colour in P2?
- Main primary colour is blue, used in every object, many shades
- except table Is red brown, candlestick honey-yellow
- uses every primary colour
- red yellow contrast the cool blue + whites
Tone?
- muted tone is used in dark blue on jug + candle to add depth and 3D look
- tone makes unrealistic painting more realistic through the 3D effect
- appears flat due to lack of tone
- the tone creates an important distance, creates depth
Brushstrokes p2
- most objects smooth and flat bc of layered paint
- background more textured due to loose brushstrokes and tonal ranges
- more texture on table too for a wood effect
Pattern p2
- at top of each object and in the wall (repetition of white and blue)
- objects: angular jug, curvy candlestick, angular pot
Atmosphere p2
- cool blues creates cold atmos
- sad thru whites and blues
- red and yellow suggest hope amongst the sadness
