Place value
The value a digit holds based on its position in a number (powers of 10).
Expanded form
A number written as the sum of the values of each digit (e.g., 3502 = 3000 + 500 + 2).
Standard form
The normal way we write numbers using one string of digits (e.g., 56 983).
Composition (of numbers)
Re-combining expanded parts to form the standard number.
Decomposition (of numbers)
Breaking a number into the place-value value of each digit.
Placeholder zero
A zero that shows no units in a place but keeps other places aligned.
Algorithm
A step-by-step procedure for solving a type of math problem.
Break-apart addition
Adding by splitting a number into easier parts (tens, ones) then combining.
Open number line
A blank line used to show jumps that represent mental addition or subtraction.
Base-10 system
Number system where each place is worth 10 × the place to its right.
