Plant Responses Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What are gibberellins?
A
Plant growth regulators that stimulate seed germination and regulate plant height via stem growth
2
Q
How are gibberelllins involved in stem growth?
A
They cause elongation of plant stems during growth by increasing the internodes (regions between the leaves on a stem)
3
Q
What is the dormancy?
A
Period of inactivity that allows the seed to withstand various adverse environmental conditions
4
Q
What is the role of gibberellins in seed germination?
A
They end the dormant state by initiating the germination process
5
Q
Process of germination:
A
- Water enters teh seed
- This absorption of water causes embryo to synthesis gibberellins
- In response, amylase and maltose enzymes are synthesised
- The amylase enzymes hydrogen the starch stored in endosperm into maltose
- This can then be broken down into glucose which provides the embryo with sugars essential for growth and energy
