plant transport Flashcards
(23 cards)
Vascular tissue
Plant tissue containing xylem and phloem tissue
Cambuim
Made of meristem cells, structure gices strength and flexible support to the stem and resistanceto bending strain
Phloem
Plant tissue used to transport sucrose and dissolved amino acids up and down the plant
Xylem
Plant tissue that transports water and dissolved ions up the plant
Lignin
Strong waterproof substance found in the walls of xylem vessel
Sieve tube element
A cell found in phloem tissue through which sucrose and amino acids are transported
Campanion cell
Cells found in phloem tissue that are closely associated with sieve tube elements and provide the ATP needed for translocation
Plasmodesmata
Direct connections between the cytoplasm of adjacent plant cells
Transpiration
Loss of water vapour from leaf
Potometer
Piece of equipment that measures water uptake by a plant
Guard cell
Cells which surround a stomata and can control the opening and closing of the stomata
Stomata
Small holes in the epidermis of a leaf surrounded by two guard cells
Casparian strip
Found in the cell wallsof the endodermis in the root which contains a waterproof substance called suberin
cohession
attractive force that holds water molecules together by hydrogen bonds
adhesion
force that attracts molecules of water to a surface by hydrogen bonds
xerophyte
plant that is adapted to live in conditions where water is in short supply or difficulct to obtain
Translocation
Transport of sucrose and amino acids made by the plant in phloem tissue
Source
releases sucrose into the phloem
sink
removes sucrose from the phloem
assimilate
substances made by a plant during photosynthesis
Apoplast pathway
water moves through the cell walls
symplast pathway
water moves through the cytoplasm and plasmodesmata
vacuolar pathway
water travels from vacuole to vacuole
