Transport in animals Flashcards
(20 cards)
Double circulatory system
Blood passes through the heart twice for each circuit of the body
Tissue fluid
Fluid that is derived from blood plasma that bathes cells
Systemic circulation
The circulation that carries blood around the body excluding the lungs`
Single circulatory system
Blood passes through the heart once for each circuit of the body
Bohr effect
The decrease in affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen in the pressence of carbon dioxide
Closed circulatory system
Blood is contained with blood vessels
Buffer
A substance that maintains a constant pH
Diastole
Relaxtion of the heart muscle
Systole
Contraction of the heart muscle
Single circulatory system
Blood passes through the heart once for each circuit of the body
Coronery arteries
An artery that branches off from the aorta that supplies oxygenated blood to the muscle
Dissociation curve
The curve on a graph that shows the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen at different oxygen partial pressures
Cardiac cycle
The sequence of events that takes place in the heart during one heartbeat
Open circulatory system
Blood is not contained in blood vessels
Electrocardiogram
The trace (graph) showing the electrical activity of the heart muscle during the cardiac cycle
Pulmonary circulation
Circulation of blood through the lungs
Diastole 1
Blood enters the right atria from the vena cava and left atria from the pulmonery vein
Pressure in the atria increases
Bicuspid and tricuspid valves open slightly
Blood starts to enter ventricles
Atrial systole
Walls of the atria contract
bicuspid and tricuspid valves open fully
blood from the atria is forced into the venticles
Ventricular systole
Blood pressure in the ventricles is higher than the atria. atrio ventricular valves close.prevents back flow from ventricles to atria
blood pressure in ventricles is higher than the arteries. semi lunar valves open
ventricles contract
blood is forced into pulmonary artey and the aorta
Diastole 2
Blood pressure in teh arteries is greater than in the ventricles
semi lunar valves close to prevent backflow of blood into the ventricles
