Plants Flashcards
(24 cards)
Where do plants get their energy to produce sugars?
They get it from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
What type of energy is stored in a living plant?
Chemical energy is stored. C-C, C-H bonds.
Can a dead plant still store energy?
Yes it still has chemical energy in it.
Do plants use light they absorb or reflect for photosynthesis?
They absorb the light for photosynthesis.
What color wavelength do plants absorb the most of?
Blue-green
What color wavelength do plants reflect the most of?
Green
What is the pigment that traps energy from sunlight?
Chlorophyll
Write the equation for photosynthesis:
6CO2 + 6H2O –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Where does photosynthesis happen? Which organelle?
Chloroplasts
Which reactant from the equation do plants collect from the air?
Carbon Dioxide
What part of the plant does Carbon Dioxide enter through?
The leaves
In the LIGHT, carbon dioxide gas moves into plant leaf cells and oxygen gas moves out. What happens in the DARK?
Oxygen moves into the plant leaf cells and carbon dioxide moves out.
What causes carbon dioxide or oxygen to move in or out of plant leaf cells in the dark?
The plant will basically preform cellular respiration in the dark.
Which processes do plants preform in the LIGHT?
Photosynthesis AND Cellular Respiration
Which processes do plants preform in the DARK?
Cellular Respiration
What’s the equation for Cellular Respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Where does cellular respiration happen? In which organelle?
In happens in the Mitochondria.
Why is the organelle above called the “ powerhouse of the cell”
Because it extracts the energy from the cells.
Explain the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
They have the same chemical equation it’s just the products and reactants that are flipped. Photosynthesis starts with CO2 and H2O but Cellular Respiration ends with them. Cellular Respiration starts with Glucose and Oxygen but Photosynthesis ends with them.
During Photosynthesis, what molecule does the Carbon in CO2, become part of?
It becomes a part of Glucose.
What process provides energy for plants to grow, repair damaged cells, produce seeds etc?
Cellular Respiration
Chlorophyll is a type of pigment, and so it the melanin in your skin. What is a pigment?
Molecules that absorb or reflect light based on wavelengths.
What might happen if plants could not produce glucose?
They wouldn’t be able to cellular respiration or have energy and they’d die.
What happens when a plant grows?
A plant gains most of it’s mass from gasses in the air. We know this because most of a plants mass comes from CO2 and this is found in the air.
