Systems/Scale and Animals Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is an atom?
Make up the mass of all matter, cannot be destroyed or created, last forever, maintain their propreties.
What is a molecule?
One or more atoms bonded together.
How are atoms and molecules different?
Atoms are it’s own thing and molecules are made up of atoms. Molecules can also be rearranged atoms can’t.
What’s an example of an atom?
Oxygen(O)
What’s an example of a molecule?
Water(H20)
How does matter move into a flame?
Ethanol and Oxygen move into the flame.
How does matter move out of a flame?
Carbon Dioxide and Water come of out the flame.
How do we know that matter moves when we burned ethanol?
Because the reactants(ethanol and oxygen) are rearranged into the products(carbon dioxide and water). We see this when the BTB changes color from blue to yellow. We also used a scale that helped us see if mass left or if mass went in.
Does the matter of something burned actually get destroyed?
No, it’s not destroyed, they’re rearranged. We start with ethanol and oxygen then as they move through the flame they rearrange into carbon dioxide and water.
What kind of energy was present before burning ethanol?
Chemical Energy
What did the chemical energy change into when the ethanol was burned?
Heat, Light, Motion Energy.
Where do the light and heat energy in a campfire come from?
They come from the chemical energy that we started with in the wood. Chemical energy turned into heat and light energy.
What is the difference between matter and energy?
Matter has mass and energy doesn’t. MATTER CANNOT TURN INTO ENERGY!!!!!
When something burns , what is the matter converted to?
Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor
What is the difference between organic and inorganic matter?
Organic burns and inorganic doesn’t. Organic also has high-energy bonds.
What materials are organic?
Humans, Wood, Gasoline, Dead leaf, Meat.
What materials are inorganic?
Sand, Water, Salt, Calcium, Aluminium.
When someone gains weight how it is done in a short amount of time?
Atoms must be added to increase mass. Energy cannot change into atoms when you ad more atoms, mass will increase.
True or False an alligator’s mass is created by another alligator?
False
True or False an alligator’s mass comes from the sunlight?
False
True or False an alligator’s mass comes from water?
True
True or False an alligator’s mass comes from food?
True
Where does MOST of the mass of an alligator come from?
The food
How does food contribute to the mass of the alligator.
The food goes through biosynthesis or cellular respiration which is either giving us energy or helping us grow. L.O.M turn into S.O.M and go through the bloodstream, some S.O.M go through biosynthesis.
