Plants Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the outer layer of the top of a leaf called?
Waxy cuticle
What is the first layer of thin tissue in a leaf called?
Epidermal tissue
What is the section in the middle of a leaf with two distinct layers?
one ‘fence’ like and the other airy
Palisade mesophyll tissue
•Lots of chloroplasts
Spongy mesophyll tissue
•Air space for increased rate of diffusion
What is the final layer at the bottom of a leaf?
Epidermal tissue
• home for the stomata and there guard cells
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from the plant
Diffusion and evaporation from the leaves
What 4 factors effect transpiration?
Rate of transpiration
Positive correlation
Light intensity (brighter)
Temperature (warmer)
Air flow
Humidity (drier)
What are magnesium ions needed for in a plant?
For making chlorophyll
• a Lack of these ions results in discolouration in the leaves (chlorosis)
What do plants need nitrates for?
To make proteins Therefore for growth
Not enough = stunted growth
Limiting factors on the rate of photosynthesis can be:
Light
Temperature
Amount of CO2
Amount of chlorophyll
