Plants Pt. 3 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the two main categories of plants?
Angiosperms (flowering plants) and Gymnosperms (cone-bearing plants).
What are the two classes of Angiosperms?
Monocots and Dicots.
What are the characteristics of Monocots?
They have parallel veins and seeds with only one cotyledon.
What are the characteristics of Dicots?
They have netted veins and seeds that produce two cotyledons.
What is a cotyledon?
One or more of which are the first leaves to appear from a germinating seed.
What are Gymnosperms?
Cone-bearing plants, typically evergreen.
What are the three life cycle classifications of plants?
Annuals, Biennials, and Perennials.
What are Annuals?
Plants that complete their life cycles in one growing season.
What are Biennials?
Plants that complete their life cycles in two growing seasons.
What are Perennials?
Plants that live for many years and produce seed and flowers each year after reaching maturity.
What is an example of a Dicot?
A cherry tree is a dicot.
What are the characteristics of Dicots?
Two seed leaves, branched veins, vascular system in rings, flower petals in multiples of four or five.
What are the characteristics of Monocots?
One seed leaf, parallel veins, flower petals in multiples of three, vascular system is scattered.
How are seeds formed in Angiosperms?
Seeds are formed during pollination.
What happens when the fruit or seed of an Angiosperm is planted?
Germination takes place for angiosperm seeds.
What are the four types of Gymnosperms?
Cycads, ginkgoes, gnetophytes, and conifers.
When did Gymnosperms and Angiosperms appear?
Gymnosperms appeared 400 million years ago; Angiosperms appeared 135 million years ago.
What does Gymnosperm mean?
It means ‘naked seed’.
Where is pollen made in Gymnosperms?
In the male cone.
What does the female cone in Gymnosperms hold?
The eggs.
How does pollination occur in Gymnosperms?
Wind blows pollen from male cones to female cones, forming new seeds.
Where do Gymnosperms germinate?
In the soil.
What are Angiosperms?
Plants that contain seeds or fruit
