Plate Tectonics 4.3 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Convergent boundary
The boundary formed the collision of two lithospheric plates
Plate tectonics
The theory that explains how large pieces of the earths outermost layer, called tectonic plates, move and change shape
Divergent boundary
The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other
Transform boundary
The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
Ridge push
When oceanic lithosphere in mid ocean ridges slides downhill into the asthenosphere due to the force of gravity
Convection
Hot rock from deep within the earth rises, but the cooler rock near he surface sinks. It causes lithosphere to move sideways and away.
Slab pull
The edge of the tectonic plate that contains oceanic lithosphere sinks and pulls the rest of the tectonic plate with it in the process slab pull
