what is a “Plot”?
a plot is a short or novel that consists of several basic events that form a whole narrative.
what is “Exposition”?
exposition is the beginning of the narrative, where you learn important background information about the characters, the setting and the situation.
what is “Rising action”?
Rising Action is after an inciting incident or significant event, where the conflict becomes more clear, and the main character starts to experience complications.
what is “Climax”?
Climax is where the point of the story’s suspense, emotions and tensions peak.
what is “Tragedy” in an story?
Tragedy in an story is a dramatic work in which the protagonist experiences a series of unfortunate reversals due to some character trait.
what is “Falling Action”?
Falling action in a story is the opposite the cause behind the falling action, the falling action details effects of what happens at the climax of the narrative, and the conflict comes to a point of resolution.
what is “Denouement”?
Denouement is “untying the knot” meaning this part of the story is normally the shortest.
what is “Resolution” in a story?
Resolution means readers still have questions about the meaning of a narrative’s events.
what does “In medias res” mean?
In medias res is “in the middle of the action” or just prior to an important event midway through the overall story.
what are “flashbacks” in an story?
Flashbacks is a scene in a narrative that is set in an earlier time than the main action.
what is “foreshadowing” in a story?
Foreshadowing is a plot device in which future events are hinted at.
what is an “Protagonist”?
the “Protagonist” is the main character in a work; often a hero or heroine, but not always.
whats an “Antagonist”?
Its a character in a story or play who opposes the protagonist; not necessarily an enemy.
What is “suspense” in an story?
an uneasy feeling that a reader gets when they don’t know what is going to happen next
What’s an “stock character” in an story?
a fictional character based on common social or literary stereotypes.
What is an flat character?
A two-dimensional character, that are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work
What’s “epiphany” in an story?
a visionary moment when a character has a sudden insight or realization that changes their understanding of themselves or their comprehension of the world
What’s “Bildungsroman” in an story?
a story that traces the moral and psychological growth of its protagonist over time
What is “coming-of-age” in an story?
a genre of literature, theatre, film, and video game that focuses on the growth of a protagonist from childhood to adulthood
What is a round character?
a character in a fictional work with depth or a complex personality
What first point of view?
the narrator is a person in the story, telling the story from their own point of view.
What’s second point of view?
the reader is part of the story
What’s third point of view?
the narrator exists outside the events of the story, and relates the actions of the characters by referring to their names or by the third-person pronouns he, she, or they.
What is direct characteristic in an story?
specific details about a character’s appearance, motivation, job, passions, and/or background, but inhibits the reader from drawing their own conclusions about the character
