Exposition
Characters are introduced, setting revealed, mood or tone is established
Rising action
Main character tries to solve a problem and encounters obstacles along the way resulting in a conflict
Conflict
Drives the plot, 5 types of conflicts: Person vs. person Person vs. society Person vs. nature Person vs. self Person vs. technology
Climax
Turning point in the story
Falling action
Results of the main character’s action or decision
Resolution
The conflict is solved or ended
Chronological order
In the order that they happened
Flashback
Stops whats happening and looks at the past
Foreshadowing
Clues about what is going to happen
Idiom
An expression tat can’t be understood from the meanings of its separate words nut must be learned as a whole.
Metaphor
A figure of speech in which one thing is spoken or written of as if it were another.
Simile
A figure of speech that uses “like” or “as” to make a comparison.
Analogy
A comparison of two things that are alike in some ways but otherwise quite different.
