Plumbing Flashcards
(33 cards)
What does MEP stand for?
Mechanical, electrical, plumbing
Two plumbing codes
IPC and UPC (uniform plumbing code)
used to indicate that a line is lying below, can be detectable or non-detectable; buried 10”-36” deep; red- yellow- orange- blue- purple- green-
Underground marking tape; power; gas; communication; potable water; irrigation (may change); sewer
Drinking supply; also supply that goes to all fixtures in a building; Needs separate trenches- at least 5’ from sewer
Potable water
Three basic purposes of plumbing
Get water out where you don’t want it; get water where you do want it; remove wastewater after its used
What does DWV stand for?
Drains, waste, and venting
Cold water =; hot water =
Waters supply; water supply after going through the water heater
Piping material for DWV
ABS or PVC
Hot and cold water distribution
PEX
piping material that is strong, corrosion-resistant, leak-proof, nonabsorbent, easily cut and joined, no-hub above ground and bell-and-spigot below ground, noise reducing
Cast iron
Plastic piping material that is more thermo resistant, used for underground exterior, susceptible to UV light, doesn’t need priming
ABS
Plastic piping material that is more heat resistant, joined by solvent cementing, has high pressure rating, orange, usually for fire sprinklers- more in residential than comercial
CPVC
Piping material that is used normally in construction industry for supply of water and as a refrigerant line in HVAC systems; can’t touch metal- will corrode; type DWV; type M, type L, type K
Copper
Thinnest type of copper piping used for… ; yellow
Type DWV
Plastic piping material used for sanitary sewers and vent piping; above and below ground storm drainage; joined by solvent cementing;
Used for most DWV
PVC
Safest plastic piping material for water distribution; not very common; comes in coils; corrosion resistant; high temperature and high pressure resistant; hot and cold water distribution; used in storm sewers
PEX
Consists of waste pipes, soil pipes, vent piping; does NOT connect to storm because it can contaminate water
Sanitary sewer
Roof drains and piping, gutter and downspouts, parking lots and streets; “gray water”-may be used for sprinklers
Storm sewer
Piping material that can be used to water distribution, sanitary waste and storm water drainage, but mainly for gas systems; durable but very heavy; coated with zinc are called galvanized pipe and are corrosion-resistant- if not galvanized, rusts
Steel
Device that measures the consumed amount of water in cubic feet or gallon
Water meters
A device that regulates the flow of water; shut off- turns it on or off, doesn’t adjust water flow; modulating/regulating- monitors how much water is flowing through
Valve
Types of drain lines
Sanitary sewer and storm sewer
Required by every fixture connected to sanitary sewer to keep sanitary gasses out of building; can be integral or external
Trap
A pipe that is used as a drain and a vent; only allowed over short distances; will need to be one pipe size bigger than the drain required for the fixture above the vent
Wet vent
