PMT - ridge push Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
what are the two forces which influence how convergent boundaries occur?
A
ridge push
slab pull
2
Q
what is ridge push?
A
Ridge push is a tectonic process where newly formed oceanic lithosphere at mid-ocean ridges is elevated due to its lower density and higher temperature and forms a slope
It cools and becomes denser, gravity causes it to slide away from the ridge, exerting a pushing force on the rest of the plate and widening the gap
This contributes to the movement of tectonic plates away from divergent boundaries.
3
Q
what does ridge push create?
A
tall volcanic mountain ranges
mid ocean ridges
