PNF techniques 2 Flashcards
AI
alternating isometrics
AI is an intermediate step to
rhythmic stabilization
What is AI?
- resists isometric contraction
- immediately followed by isometric contraction of antagonist pattern
What is AI used for?
balancing tone - often in trunk stabilization
What is rhythmic stabilization?
think perturbations
purpose of RS?
- cocontraction affects both sides of the joint
- maintained resistance facilitates stabilization
When would RS be used?
- limited ROM due to splinting or pain
- usu for head, neck, trunk stability
SR
slow reversal
What is slow reversal?
think moving through D1/D2
- movement slow and rhythmic
- can use resistance but don’t have to
SR inhibits
arousal via RAS
stimulates activation
SRH
slow reversal hold
SRH DEC
through decrement of range
SRH INC
through increment of range
application: SRH DEc
pt can’t stabilize (ataxic), builds up ability to stabilize
application: SRH INC
pt doesn’t have control through full ROM
builds up ability to move through full ROM with control
SRH application
develop endurance and strength within pattern of movement
AR
agonistic reversal
What is AR?
think bridge
concentric » isometric » eccentric » isometric
When would AR be used?
weakness or spasticity prevents control of body through full range
RP
resisted progression
RP
resisted isotonic movement during locomotion
think crawling
purpose of RP
resistance results in overflow
RC
repeated contractions
What is RC?
- isotonic AROM to point of weakness
- Isometric hold, then quick stretch
- isotonically move to new range
- repeat
