Syntax

Hyperbole
an exaggeration often used for emphasis.
Ex: I’ve been waiting forever!
Simile
a comparison between two dissimilar things using specific words of comparison such as like, as, than, resembles.
Ex: He runs like the wind
Metaphor
the comparison between to dissimilar thing (saying one this in the other)
Ex: The classroom was a madhouse
Extended Metaphor
the comparison continues throughout the paragraph/stanza/or the entire work.
Imagery
“word pictures” to help evoke an emotional response. writers use sensory details to appeal to one or more of our five senses.
Ex: The golden pancakes sizzled on the griddle, the sweet aroma wafting through the air
Allusion
is a reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work that a writer expects the reader to recognize.
Ex: Owen’s little smile is my kryptonite
Personification
a thing, idea, or animal is given human attributes.
Ex: The wind whispered through the dry grass.
Rhythm
the pattern of sound created by the arrangement of intervals and stressed syllables in a line; can be regular or irregular.
Meter
a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that sets the overall mood of a poem.
Rhyme
the repetition of the same stressed vowel sound and any succeeding sound in two or more words.
Internal Rhyme
occurs within lines of poetry
End Rhyme
occurs at the end of lines
Slant Rhyme
a close or imperfect rhyme; also called a half-rhyme
Rhyme Scheme
the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse
Alliteration
the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words
Consonance
the repetition of consonant sounds within or at the ends of words.
Assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words
