the narrative voice of the poem (not necessarily the poet)
Speaker
a structural part or section of a poem (sort of like a paragraph in a piece of prose)
Stanza
the speaker’s attitude toward the subject matter
Tone
an extended metaphor that applies multiple characteristics of an object to something else
Conceit
a brief reference to an event or person from history, literature, or popular culture, which is meant to activate background knowledge
Allusion
exaggeration for effect
Hyperbole
an exact match of sounds
Perfect rhyme
a close but not exact match of sounds—usually the final consonants are similar but not the same
Near rhyme
rhyme that falls at the end of two or more lines in a poem (not necessarily together)
End rhyme
a rhyming pair that falls within the same line of poetry (rather than at the end of lines)
Internal rhyme
two consecutive lines that rhyme
Couplet
repetition of initial consonant sounds
Consonance
repetition of vowel sounds
Assonance
spellings of paired words appear to rhyme, but the sounds don’t
ex: love and prove
Sight rhyme
the use of words that sound like what they mean
Ex: buzz, whoosh, boom
Onomatopoeia
a representation of rhyming patterns in letters
Rhyme scheme
a fourteen-line lyrical poem with the following rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
