What is saluting
A salute is a gesture of respect or goodwill which requires officers to raise their hands to the
peak of their headdress and bring the hand down smartly to their side.
All members of the Service in uniform shall pay compliments to the under mentioned
by saluting
Their excellencies, the President and his wife.
(ii) The Honourable Prime Minister.
(iii) Members of Cabinet.
(iv) The Chief Justice, all judges of the Appeal Court and other judges of the High
Court.
(v) President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
(vi) The Chairman of the Tobago House of Assembly.
(vii) Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
(d) Members of the Service, when in uniform, shall salute officers’ senior in rank to
themselves in the services listed hereunder:
(i) Commissioned officers of the Defence Force;
(ii) First Division officers of the Fire Service;
(iii) Officers of and above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of the Prison
Service.
Paying of compliments in a vehicle
Police officers who are sitting in a vehicle which is stationary, shall pay compliments by sitting to
attention and giving an eyes’ right or left as the case may be, and the driver of such vehicle shall
place his hands on the steering wheel.
Paying of compliments when mounted
Police officers when mounted on horseback, shall pay compliments by sitting upright and giving a
hand salute.
Paying of compliments in a charge room
On the arrival of a senior officer on a visit to a charge room the following actions shall be taken:
(a) The first officer on duty who observes the arrival of the visiting officer shall call the charge
room personnel to attention.
(b) The senior officer on duty in the charge room shall salute and report on the state of his district.
- Paying of compliments to the national anthem
First Division officers in uniform shall pay compliments by saluting when the national anthem of
Trinidad and Tobago and all other nations are being played. All Second Division officers must stand
smartly to attention.
Paying of compliments to the national flag
First Division officers in uniform shall salute while the national flag is being raised, lowered or
carried on parade. Second Division officers must stand at attention.
Compliments to be reciprocated
(1) Where a party of junior officers are paying compliments to a First Division officer, the most
senior officer in that party shall salute and the other officers will stand to attention.
(2) It shall be the duty of the First Division officer to whom a compliment is paid to return a
salute with the courtesy it deserves.

(3) Where two or more First Division officers are together, the senior shall return the
compliment.
Non-paying of Compliments
A police officer shall not be required to pay compliments in public view to First Division officers of
the plainclothes sections of the Police Service—
(a) When in control of any mechanically propelled vehicle that is in motion.
(b) When actually engaged in directing traffic.
(c) When on any other duty that requires an officer’s full attention (e.g., crowd control).

Trinidad and Tobago and all other nations are being played. All Second Division officers must stand
smartly to attention.
Armed sentries will present arms to
to:
(a) His Excellency, The President.
(b) The Honourable Prime Minister.
(c) The Honourable Chief Justice.
(d) Members of Cabinet.
(e) First Division officers of and above the rank of Superintendent.
(f) Commissioned officers of and above the rank of Major of the Defence Force.

To be impartial in the performance of your duties i.e., not to be influenced by an
individual’s race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, etc.
To be loyal to the continued existence and preservation of the democratic state of
Trinidad and Tobago.
To preserve the peace.
To faithfully discharge your duties according to law.
To disclose information coming into your possession as a result of your office only
when authorized to do so.
To protect any secrets that comes to your knowledge in the course of your duti

OATH TO BE TAKEN WHEN RETURNING AN AFFIDAVIT:

- General duties of police officer
A police officer
(a) shall preserve the peace and detect crimes and other breaches of the law;
(b) may arrest, charge and bring before a summary court a person found committing any offence
rendering him liable to arrest without warrant, or whom he may reasonably suspect of having
committed any such offence;
(c) may summon before a summary court a person whom he reasonably suspects of committing
an offence;
(d) may prosecute a person who commits any offence;
(e) shall serve and execute at any time, including Sundays, all processes which he may be
directed to serve or execute;
(f) shall keep order in and within the precincts and in the vicinity of all courts during all sittings
of such courts;
(g) shall repress internal disturbances; and
(h) shall generally do and perform all the duties appertaining to the office of a constable.
On duty attire and appearance of and officer
Police officers when on duty must always be cleanly and smartly attired. They shall not appear in
the public view improperly dressed.
