Cadiz Expedition
1625, led by Buckingham
- Parliament initially happy about war, but sceptical of giving large subsidies
- Campaign goes horribly wrong and Parliament begins their dislike of Buckingham

- Laud chosen to do opening sermon instead of Dean of Westminster
- John Pym key opponent- brought charges against Montagu
- Earl of Bristol threatens to expose Charles’ Catholic sympathies (promised to remove anti-Catholic laws if infanta married him)

- Charged for not paying forced Loan
- Court rules that Charles had right to demand money without parliamentary consent in this specific case
- Controversy caused as Charles is caught attempting to tamper the ruling allowing him to demand money without parliament in any case
La-Rochelle disaster

- Huguenots (protestants) persecuted in Catholic france
- Once again led by Buckingham and ends in disaster; ladder too short; 4 thousand troops starved

- Asserted fundamental rights
- Aims: no taxation without consent, no imprisonment without cause, no force billeting of soldiers in citizens’ homes, no martial law in peacetime
- Forcefully passed, but King ensured there would be doubts about its legal standing- granted by his grace rather than their rights
- 1628 Parliament dominated with religious and financial grievances
