population ecology Flashcards

1
Q

What is per capita population growth rate?

A
  • the rate at which the population size changes per individual in the population
  • This growth rate is determined by the birth, death, emigration, and migration rates in the population

Q

Differentiate exponential and logistic growth.**

A
  • exponential: presumes infinite resources, resulting in unrestrained population expansion.
  • logistic: considers resource limitations and a carrying capacity (K) - the maximum sustainable population.

Q

What is a population-regulating factor?

A
  • any parameter (intra or extra) that prevents a population from growing exponetially
  • ex. lack of mates, disease, lack of food

Q

What are meta-population dynamics? Why are meta-population dynamics closely linked to human interactions with other species?*****

A
  • interaction of a population thrugh time and space
  • different sub populatons that move around (immigrate and emmigrate) to different habitats/spaces
  • they are changng spatial, SPATIAL
  • additions parameteres (rates): immigration and emmigration
  • a metapopulation is made up of small, isolate populations
  • although some subpopulations go extinct iver time, migration can resore os establish subpopulatons
  • realted to humans because humans immigarte and emmigrate. humans can take advantage of spaces that have been abondoned by other species

Q

what is ecology

A
  • the science of interactions
  • study of species spcies and species environment interactions
  • how to species percieve their environment and thus how do they make decisions?
  • everything in ecology is SCALE dependant

Q

questions in ecology

A
  • structural: who/what is there (age, gender, competition, diversity, etc)
  • dynamical (how does that change through time and/or space)

perspectives in ecology

A
  • physiologial
  • POPULATION
  • COMMUNITY
  • landscape
  • ecosystem
  • evolutionary
  • these are base on and ask structal and dynamical questions
