Population Genetics flashcards #1
To familiarize yourself with the vocabulary. (10 cards)
A variation is
changes in the phenotypes of organisms.
Variations of organism can be caused by
mutations, environmental factors, inheritance, meiosis, recombination of chromosomes
crossing over is
sharing of genetic information between chromosomes, leads to variation.
Evolution occurs when
there is an increase of reproductive rates of organisms with beneficial variations.
Evolution is
a change of one organism into a different, more specialized, organism, these organisms no longer breed.(share genetic information)
Adaptation is
a phenotypic change of an organism, but breeding is still possible between other, non-changed organisms. (still share genetic information)
Extant means
living relative
Cladograms are
model to shows relationships between organisms
Microevolution
small genetic changes in organisms leading into different but similiar organisms. Gray wolf and Dog.
Macroevolution
large genetic changes in organisms leading into very different organisms.
