A
  • prevention and reduction of challenging behaviour by improving the quality of life to the person and those around them

Q

Problem with punishment and extinction

A

punishment
- breeds resentment, highlights the problem behaviour, copied by others, breads fear, lack of motivation and does nothing to promote good behaviour

extinction
- assumes that if you walk away from the behaviour, then the person will stop doing it as they will no longer get a pay off, leading to a person upping the ante, consistency is impossible, seems uncaring, can be seen as condoning the behaviour

Q

Adaptive behaviour?

A

PBS suggests that instead of focusing on the challenging behaviour we focus on developing adaptive behaviour that will overwhelm the challenging behaviour.

(adaptive = works well for them and those around them)

Q

How and Why does BPS work?

A
  • we model appropriate behaviour
  • strengthens the relationship between carer and client
  • look at why the person does what they do and help them find a better way of getting what they want
  • noticing appropriate behaviour helps them feel more competent and less frustrated
  • motivates staff and keeps us thinking in positive terms about clients
