Post-partum Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
define ‘puerperium’
A
period of uterine involution
2
Q
what occurs during uterine involution
A
- uterus returns to original size
- SM cells decrease in size and myometrial mass decreases
- endometrial glands are degraded by granulocytes - form discharge (lochia)
- takes about 6 weeks in cow
- < 3 weeks in other species
- new epithelial cells cover uterine surface
3
Q
describe the hormonal action post-partum
A
- placenta shed so progesterone production stops, releases -ve feedback on hypothalamus
- GnRH pulsatility resumes
- LH stores take 2-3 weeks to replenish
- FSH causes 1st follicular wave
4
Q
describe the 1st DF growth post partum in cattle
A
- placenta shed, oestradiol & progesterone decrease, -ve feedback on hypothalamus removed
- GnRH pulsatility resumes immediately after parturition
- LH stores are replenished
- 1st transient FSH rise occurs 1 week after parturition
- 1st cohort grows & DF selected on day 10-12 pp
- fate of DF depends on LH pulse frequency
- frequent pulses - DF ovulates
- infrequent pulses - DF becomes atretic, next cohort emerges
5
Q
describe what affects the 1st ovulation pp in a dairy cow
A
- E balance determines when ovulation will resume
- BCS at calving & pp influence LH pulsatility pp
- 1st DF has a good chance of ovulating but is rarely preceeded by oestrus
- non-funtional CL produced with lifespan 8-9 days
- ovulate again very quickly afterwards & show heat before next ovulation
6
Q
describe what affects the 1st ovulation pp in a beef cow
A
- BCS at calving determines when 1st ovulation will occur pp
- suckling/maternal bond will delay LH pulsatility and return to ovulation
