-380-370 southern italy krater
-Aristophanes produced his women at the Thesmophoria in 411 BC. details how has been reproduced in southern Italy
- play subverts one of Euripides plot, telephus, sizes orestes as hostage and thesmo, Euripides relative disguises himself as a women in order to infiltrate the fame festival and find what they think of Euripides, siezes one of the babies as hostage to protect himslef when his disguise is discovered , only to discover that the baby is a wineskin proving all women do is get drunk
-relative disguised as women (phallus showing), with women wreth dress and girdle, and saggy tights
mother rushes up to try and save the baby but its a krater because she wants to save the wine
- alter, masks, grotesque features. Tightsto disguise gender, props on stage, evidence of how arisophanes portrays women- obsessed with wine and sex

  • Cratinus did produce a play called Cheirones and as characters are named this could relate to the play

  • he is a slave and we can see his bundle of stuff, on the stage behind him.
  • behind Cheiron is a garlanded youth- probs , Achilles , Cheirons pupil
  • Stage can be seen clearly from the side, possible doorway with a projecting porch, could represent the temple at delphi where Cheiron was healed by Apollo
    -both male and female, stage building, masks , slave, old man and women
  • western greeks valued Athenian plays whether past or present
