How was the Throckmorton plot uncovered?
- Francis Walsingham had been watching Throckmorton for months and Francis Throckmorton was exceuted for High Treason in 1584
Babington Plot

- Mary started a conspiracy with Anthony Babington sending letters with a plan to kill Elizabeth
-Letters were intercepted by Francis Walsingham and Babington was executed for treason
When was Mary Queen of Scots executed?

What were some of the problems and advantages with Mary’s execution?
- made Mary a catholic martyr which increased catholic opposition abroad.
- English catholics rebelling
This caused Phillip to be determined to invade. - Elizabeth’s reputation would have been ruined as she had committed regicide
- removed Catholic threat as there was nobody to rally behind and hope was lost.
Why did Mary have a strong claim to the throne?
- Some people believed that Elizabeth was illegitimate as her father got divorced from his first wife.
- She was a Catholic - supported by Catholics who opposed Elizabeth’s rule.

What caused the Earl of Essex (Robert Devereux) to rebel.
- He was sent to Ireland to destroy Tyrone’s Rebellion but failed and called a truce and went back to England without Lizzy’s permission
-Elizabeth puts him under house arrest, strips him of his monopoly of sweet wines which had meant he went on to revolt.
