PPT (Digestive System) Flashcards
(38 cards)
It is the process in which food is broken down into smaller molecules that the body can use to nourish the cells and provide energy.
Digestion
Food undergoes these two phases of digestion.
Mechanical and Chemical Phase
In this phase, food is broken down into small pieces by chewing (mastication) and softened by digestive juices such as saliva and gastric juice.
Mechanical Phase
In this phase, food is acted upon by chemical substances called enzymes that are secreted together with digestive juices.
Chemical Phase
The five key processes of the digestive system.
Ingestion, Digestion (mechanical and chemical), Absorption, Transport, and Excretion
Digestion begins in this part of the body.
Mouth
These break down food into small pieces.
Teeth
This mixes food with saliva and helps in swallowing.
Tongue
These secrete saliva that lubricates food.
Salivary glands
This pushes food into the pharynx.
Swallowing
This is the common passageway for digestion and respiration, located at the back of the mouth.
Pharynx (throat)
This is a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach.
Esophagus
The process of transporting food through the esophagus.
Peristalsis
The stomach is an expanded organ located between these two parts of the digestive system.
Esophagus and Small Intestine
These are the three functions of the stomach.
Stores swallowed food, mixes food with digestive juices, conveys contents slowly into the small intestine
The thick liquid formed when food mixes with gastric juices in the stomach.
Chyme
This organ is considered the organ of complete digestion and absorption.
Small Intestine
This secretes enzymes that change food materials into their simplest form.
Small Intestine
The organ that follows the small intestine.
Large Intestine (Colon)
The three parts of the large intestine.
Ascending colon, Transverse colon, Descending colon
These are the three functions of the colon.
Temporarily stores fecal materials, absorbs vitamins produced by bacteria, reabsorbs water from undigested residue
This is located at the end of the sigmoid colon and serves as a warehouse for feces.
Rectum
The exit point of fecal materials.
Anus
These glands secrete saliva, a chemical substance that is a combination of watery fluid and mucus.
Salivary Glands
