Practical lab classes-blood Flashcards
What are the main sources of blood glucose?
Diet, glycogenolysis, and gluconeogenesis
What is haematocrit a measure of?
% of erythrocytes in your blood/ a sample
What can a HemoCue measure?
The g of haemoglobin per 100mL of blood
What can be measured from a blood sample?
Blood glucose, blood lactate, blood haemoglobin and hematocrit
What does OGTT stand for?
Oral glucose tolerance test
What does an OGTT measure?
How well the body can process large amounts of sugar
How is an OGTT done?
Fast for 8 hrs
Drink a drink containing 75g glucose (maltodextrin)
BGC measured every x time (e.g. 30 mins) after
What is FPG?
Fasting plasma glucose
What does FPG measure?
Blood glucose levels at least 8 hrs after fasting
What does HBA1C stand for?
Haemoglobin A1C
What does a HBA1C test measure?
Total amount of glucose attached to haemoglobin
What is the healthy range of blood sugar?
4-7mmol/l
What kind of blood sampling was done in the lab?
Finger-tip
How can the hematocrit be measured?
Prick your finger with a lancet, collect blood using hematocrit tube (red end).
Non-red end is pressed into plasticine
Equipment for measuring hematocrit?
Gloves, sharps and soft bin, tissue, alcohol swab, lancet and hematocrit tube.
What is done to the finger before the lancet is applied?
Cleaned with an alcohol swab
Where on the finger is the lancet applied?
Opposite to the nail bed
What is done with the first drop of blood that is visible?
It is wiped away
How should the participants hand be held?
Finger pointing down
What end is the blood collected into?
Red end
How full should the tube be?
2/3-3/4
Which end of the tube is pressed into the plasticine?
Non-red end
What equipment is required to measure haemoglobin
Gloves, tissue paper, alcohol swab, lancet, HemoCue microcuvette, HemoCue analyser, and a sharps and softs bin
What temp should the subjects hand be when taking a fingertip sample?
Warm
