Practice questions Flashcards
What is most associated with informational social influence?
It is more likely to lead to a permanent rather than temporary, change in attitude.
What is internalization?
The individual changes his/her public and private beliefs.
How does Aschs conformity research illustrates replicability?
Replicability-Asch’s studies had standardised procedures e.g the number of confederates ;length of lines etc) which meant that they could be repeated/replicated to assess consistency/reliability of the findings;this increased the validity of the conclusions drawn.
How does Aschs conformity research illustrate theory construction?
Asch’s findings led to the development of explanations/theories of conformity e.g that people will conform to group pressure to avoid ridicule (normative social influence)
How did aschs conformity influence illustrate hypothesis testing?
Aschs research tested the assumption that naive participants would conform to an obviously wrong answer placed under group pressure;this was achieved by manipulating an IV (fake/genuine answer)to measure the effect on the DV and keeping other (possible confounding variables constant.
Briefly outline how two variables investigated by Asch were found to affect conformity?
-increasing task difficulty increased conformity
-writing the answer down (rather than saying it allowed)reduced conformity
-individual differences e.g highly confident individuals conformed
Describe and evaluate the procedure of Zimbardo’s research into social roles.
A01:
-24 U.S male student volunteers
-Randomly assigned role of prisoner or guard
-Prisoners unexpectedly arrested at home
-deloused, given prison uniform and ID number
-given some rights e.g 3 meals 3 supervised toilet trips a day and 2 visits a week.
-Guards were given uniforms, clubs, whistles and wore reflective sunglasses
-Zimbardo took role of prison superintendent planned duration was two weeks
-stopped after 6 days
