How does social class affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- Different class played different sports (UC - Real Tennis, LC - Mob football)
- Different roles/positions in sports that they did play together. E.g. Cricket and Pedestrianism
- Cricket - UC - Batters - Glory, LC - Bowlers - seen as the more labouring role
- Pedestrianism - UC - Back/ sponsor LC to make money, LC - compete in competitive race walking
How does Law and Order affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- Very little law and order because of no police force
Limited rules and regulations
Sports were cruel and violent
e.g. mob football - no murder - Lots of animal cruelty because of no RSPCA
e.g. cock fighting
How does education affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- LC - Not educated and illiterate because they couldn’t afford education as you had to pay for it
Working class could only play simple sports with limited rules as they couldn’t read or write
e.g. mob football - UC - only boys well-educated and literate
Played more complicated sports with rules
e.g. Real Tennis & Cricket
How does gender affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- Females seen as ‘weaker’ sex
- Activities could not be dangerous
- Less demanding sports - ladylike
- Women were there to have children and look after the men therefore couldn’t do anything that potential stop them having children
- LC - smock fighting - ladylike
- UC - Archery/ real tennis - not dangerous
How does income affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- UC - Rich
Had the money to buy equipment and specialised facilities
e.g. Real tennis, fox hunting - LC - Poor
Had to free natural facilities as couldn’t afford equipmet
How does time affect sports in Pre-industrial Britain?
- LC worked long and exhausting hours on the land
Little appetite for additional exercise
Activities usually on holidyas, holy days or festivals, 2-3 times a year
e.g. mob football - UC didn’t work therefore had time to play long lasting sports
e.g. fox hunting
How does education affect Transport in Pre-industrial Britain?
- Poor road condition
- Different rules at different villages - not standardised
- LC - walking
Play locally
e.g. mob football - UC - horse and cart
were able to travel e.g. tennis court or cricket pitches
built sports facilities at home to avoid travelling on poor roads
