Pre release Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a synapse?
the site of transmission of electric nerve impulses between two nerve cells (neurons)
Describe how dopamine is used to cause a nerve impulse to cross a synapse.
Dopamine stimulates the producion of nerve impulses in the postsynaptic neurones
What happens to a neurotransmitter once a nerve impulse has been generated in the next neurone?
the neurotransmitter is reabsorbed back into the presynaptic neuron and restored inside a vesicle ready to be used again. For example, noradrenaline
Inhibitors prevent an enzyme from catalysing reactions. How could the inhibitor work?
Competitive
Non competitive
How would dopamine levels be increased if the drug monoamide oxidase B inhibitors was prescribed?
more dopamine becomes available to treat your symptoms
How do Levodopa and Dopamine agonists increase the concentration of dopamine in the brain?
they activate dopamine receptors
Which part of the brain controls movement
Cerebellum
Name a disease caused by malnutrition and give the cause
Kwashiorkor is a protein deficiency disease, caused due to poor intake of protein
Clinical trials are carefully overseen and regulated. Give 3 ways in which people on drug
trails are protected.
